About the department

Community Health Nursing is a specialty which completely focuses on preventive aspects of diseases and promotion of health of an individual as a whole. The department actively participates in training, service, and research in the field of community health nursing. The department is committed for developing the competent community health nurses by providing them with appropriate knowledge, skills, and evolving positive attitude for working in community. 

Health care in the context of the community represents an alternative mode of health-care delivery. Emphasis is placed on promoting health and access to care by addressing the health-care needs of people where they live and work.

The field training is imparted in both rural and urban areas in order to provide preventive, curative, rehabilitative and referral services to the residents. The department actively participates in all national health programmes implemented by Government of India and State government. The department laboratory with a floor area of 1212.57sq.ft, has an excellent infrastructure to aid teaching and learning activities.

Objectives

The objectives of department of community health nursing are to:

• Recall the components of community health nursing.
• Reviews the administrative set up of PHC and functions as a member of the health team while rendering health care services.
• Participates in various health programmes.
• Practice principles of home visit.
• Identifies the need, assesses the problem in the community.
• Plans care on a short term and long-term basis for individuals, family and community.
• Implements the planned activities on a priority basis.
• Treat the minor ailments.
• Observe environmental sanitation and personal hygiene.
• Identifies the socio-economic and nutritional status of the family.
• Identifies cases of communicable diseases, STD, leprosy, and renders referral services and follow up care.
• Describe community welfare services which can be helpful to the individuals and families.

COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING LAB- PRACTICAL

1. Objectives

• To educate the students to establish working relationships with families from various communities.
• To teach regarding delivery of effective nursing care to the assigned families using community health nursing process
• To demonstrate various practical skills in performing nursing procedures at home.
• To encourage the students to provide planned and incidental health teachings to both families and individuals in the community
• To impart knowledge about various communities and their needs to the students.

Learning Outcomes:

The students will be able to

• Demonstrate the role of community health nurse in the community areas.
• Apply the concepts of community participation and empowerment when addressing the health or developmental needs of the community
• Conduct community assessment and diagnosis
• Identify the high-risk groups in the community and also the risk factors
• Develop and implement action plan relevant to the need of the community
• Participate in field health activities at various health centers
• Identify and utilize the available resources in the community to the maximum effect
• Develop linkages between the health centers and the community for sustainable growth
