The term “midwife” literally means “with woman.” Although nurse-midwives are best known for their work during pregnancy and specifically labor and delivery, nurse midwives care for women’s health in a comprehensive way.

The Department of Maternal & Child Health Nursing is focused on fostering to enhance the knowledge and skill of the students in Antenatal, Intra Natal, Post Natal & Newborn Wards apart from theory classes. The department imparts them as exemplary in Maternal & Child Health Nursing.

The Maternal & Child Health Lab is equipped with all articles, models, charts & various play therapy materials, here students learn about all the nursing care skills like Antenatal Assessment, Conducting Normal and Abnormal Labour, Essential & Immediate New Born Care. The department is provides   clinical and class room teaching for undergraduate, post graduate & diploma in nursing students.

Objectives:

The objectives of department of are to:

  1. Believe that the nursing students trained in the obstetrics and gynecological nursing department are efficient in their specialty. They function effectively and efficiently in various extended and expanded roles to make community, incorporating the changing needs of the society and health care delivery system.
  2. Recognize that the nursing students trained here can demonstrate leadership qualities to work in every gynecological department, both in and out of the country.
  3. Accept that obstetrics and gynecological nursing training can mold the nurse with power and attitudes in all areas of nursing and to uphold the professional image.
  4. Describe the concepts of biophysical, psychological and spiritual aspects of normal pregnancy, labor and puerperium.
  5. Provide comprehensive nursing care to women during reproductive period and newborns.
  6. Integrate the concepts of family centered nursing care and nursing process approach in obstetric and gynecological nursing.
  7. Identify and analyze the deviations from normal birth process and refer appropriately.
  8. Evaluate pharmacological agents, their effects during pregnancy, child birth, puerperium, lactation and the role of nurse
  9. Contribute to the body of knowledge through research, health educations and publications.

MATERNAL &CHILD HEALTH NURSING LAB- PRACTICAL

1. Aims

  1. To acquire knowledge and skills in reducing nursing care to normal & high risk pregnant woman during antenatal and postnatal periods. To develops skills in managing normal and high risk neonates and participate in family welfare programme.
  2. The lab provides students with a realistic, stimulated clinical environment to practice and demonstrate competency of selected nursing skills on Maternal Child Health.

2. Objectives:

  1. Provide students with the nursing skills that are necessary to care for mother and child during the physiological or pathological events.
  2. To provide hand on learning experience to the students on specific to course objectives as directed by the nursing curriculum.
  3. Reinforcing and teaching the students by Simulation technology and related resources (specifically Antenatal Assessment Labour, PPH Management).
  4. Increase preparedness of the nursing students before introduction to hospital training.
  5. To make the students informed regarding MCH care practices and guidelines/protocols of MOHFW.
  6. Students will be evaluated by OSCH checklist and can improve their practical skills.
