About the department:

The Fundamentals of Nursing department is a cornerstone of every nursing college, dedicated to shaping skilled nurses who embody a healing touch. This department is committed to equipping students with the essential knowledge and competencies needed to deliver evidence-based care. Nursing is regarded as both an art and a science, focused on the care of individuals through the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health and overall well-being throughout their lives.

To support this educational mission, the Fundamentals Lab is fully equipped with a wide range of resources, including articles, models, charts, and simulation dummies. These tools enable students to practise and master essential nursing skills necessary for adult care.

The department offers comprehensive clinical and classroom instruction for undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma nursing students, ensuring that all learners receive a thorough grounding in fundamental nursing principles and practices. Through this rigorous training, students are prepared to meet the challenges of the nursing profession and provide high-quality care to their future patients.

Objectives:

• Develop understanding about the concept of health, illness and scope of nursing within health care services
• Apply values, code of ethics and professional conduct in professional life.
• Apply the principles and methods of effective communication in establishing communication links with patients, families and other health team members.
• Develop the skills in recording and reporting.
• Demonstrate competency in monitoring and documenting vital signs.
• Develop understanding about fundamentals of health assessment in supervised clinical settings.
• Describe the principles and techniques of infection control and biomedical waste management.
• Identify and meet the comfort needs of the patients.
• Perform admission, transfer and discharge of a patient under supervision applying the knowledge.
• Demonstrate understanding and application of knowledge in caring for patients with restricted mobility.
• Identify the educational needs of patients and demonstrate basic skills of patient health education.

FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING LAB

Aims:

• Practical training in the fundamental lab equips students with essential knowledge, skills and attitude needed to provide accurate, safe and comprehensive nursing care for normal adults.
• The lab provides students with a realistic, stimulated clinical environment to practise and demonstrate competency of selected nursing skills.

• Provide hands-on learning experience specific to course objectives as directed by the nursing curriculum.
• To prepare students for handling well and sick patients in a technically safe environment.
• To provide opportunity for learning and practising various basic nursing procedures.
• To make the students informed regarding modern health care practices and guidelines/protocols.
• Increase preparedness of the nursing students before introduction to hospital training.
• Provide students with the nursing skills that are necessary to care for the patient during the physiological or pathological events
• To reinforce learning using simulation technology and related resources.
