The advances in information technology compelled library professionals to equip themselves with the latest information and communication technology. The setting up of the department is an attempt in that direction to create more and more qualified library staff duly trained in the latest technology. The department was established in 2008 with a Bachelor's course in Library and Information Science. The rousing support and popularity of the course moved the University administration to the extent that it introduced the Postgraduate (M. Lib., ISC) & M. Phil. course in 2009. Another pioneering step in the progress of the department was the introduction of a research programme leading to the degree of PhD in the year 2010. A special feature of the Department is the adoption of updated curricula with an emphasis on Information Technology and the training of a number of library automation software packages.
