India has the largest diaspora population in the world, with communities located across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. While maintaining strong cultural and linguistic ties to India, these communities have also adapted to and shaped their host societies. As a result, questions of migration, identity, memory, belonging, and cultural exchange have become central to contemporary academic research.

The Centre for Diaspora Studies promotes systematic research and informed public understanding of the literature, languages, cultures, histories, and social experiences of Indian diaspora communities worldwide. It supports scholarly engagement with diaspora literature, language preservation, cultural identity, intercultural dialogue, and the changing meanings of Indianness in an increasingly interconnected world.

As an interdisciplinary academic centre, it brings together perspectives from literature, sociology, anthropology, history, and linguistics. Through seminars, conferences, workshops, research projects, and publications, the Centre seeks to contribute to national and international scholarship while fostering broader awareness of diasporic experiences across generations.

केंद्र के बारे में

भारत विश्व का सबसे बड़ा प्रवासी समुदाय रखने वाला देश है। ऐतिहासिक, आर्थिक, सामाजिक और सांस्कृतिक कारणों से भारतीयों का विश्व के विभिन्न देशों में प्रवासन हुआ है। इन प्रवासी समुदायों ने न केवल अपनी भाषा, संस्कृति और परंपराओं को जीवित रखा है, बल्कि बहुसांस्कृतिक समाजों के साथ निरंतर संवाद करते हुए विशिष्ट प्रवासी पहचान का निर्माण भी किया है।

प्रवासी समुदायों के अनुभव जैसे- विस्थापन की पीड़ा, स्मृति और नॉस्टेल्जिया, सांस्कृतिक द्वंद्व, भाषायी संरक्षण, आत्मसात और प्रतिरोध समकालीन साहित्य और सामाजिक विमर्श के केंद्रीय विषय बन चुके हैं। ऐसे में प्रवासी साहित्य, भाषा और संस्कृति का समग्र अध्ययन समय की अनिवार्य आवश्यकता है।

प्रवासी अध्ययन केंद्र की स्थापना का उद्देश्य भारतीय प्रवासी समुदायों के साहित्य, भाषा, संस्कृति, इतिहास और सामाजिक संरचना से जुड़े विविध आयामों पर गंभीर अध्ययन एवं शोध को प्रोत्साहित करना है। यह केंद्र साहित्य, समाजशास्त्र, मानवशास्त्र, इतिहास और भाषा अध्ययन जैसे विषयों को एक साझा अकादमिक मंच पर लाकर अंतर्विषयी शोध को सशक्त बनाएगा।

यह केंद्र शोध, संगोष्ठियों, व्याख्यानों, कार्यशालाओं, शोध परियोजनाओं और प्रकाशनों के माध्यम से प्रवासी अध्ययन को अकादमिक दृष्टि से समृद्ध करने का प्रयास करेगा। साथ ही, यह केंद्र वैश्विक परिप्रेक्ष्य में भारतीय संस्कृति और भाषाओं की निरंतरता, परिवर्तन और पुनर्रचना को समझने का एक सशक्त बौद्धिक केंद्र बनेगा।

Background

Background Historical processes such as indenture, labor migration, and contemporary mobility have resulted in the settlement of Hindi-speaking communities across regions including Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, South Africa, and the Caribbean. These communities have sustained rich traditions of literature, oral narratives, and cultural practices rooted in memory and linguistic continuity. Within these contexts, nostalgia and cultural memory play a vital role in preserving language and cultural identity. Literary expression in its regional varieties has enabled communities to maintain ancestral connections while engaging with new cultural environments. The Centre was established to study these developments in a systematic and academic manner.

उपनिवेशवाद के विस्तार, वैश्विक आर्थिक आवश्यकताओं और श्रम की बढ़ती माँग के कारण उन्नीसवीं शताब्दी में भारतीयों का संगठित रूप से विदेश गमन प्रारंभ हुआ। विशेष रूप से दास प्रथा की समाप्ति के पश्चात ब्रिटिश उपनिवेशों में श्रम संकट उत्पन्न हुआ, जिसके समाधान के लिए भारत से श्रमिकों को अनुबंधित श्रम प्रणाली के अंतर्गत विभिन्न उपनिवेशों में ले जाया गया। इसी ऐतिहासिक परिप्रेक्ष्य में गिरमिटिया प्रथा का उद्भव हुआ, जिसने भारतीय प्रवासन के इतिहास को निर्णायक रूप से प्रभावित किया।

गिरमिटिया प्रथा, औपनिवेशिक कालीन श्रमिक प्रवासन तथा समकालीन वैश्विक गतिशीलता जैसी ऐतिहासिक प्रक्रियाओं के परिणामस्वरूप हिंदी भाषी भारतीय समुदाय विश्व के अनेक देशों में स्थापित हुए। मॉरीशस, फिजी, सूरीनाम, त्रिनिदाद और टोबैगो, गुयाना, दक्षिण अफ्रीका तथा कैरिबियन क्षेत्र सहित विभिन्न भौगोलिक क्षेत्रों में बसे इन समुदायों ने कठिन परिस्थितियों के बावजूद अपनी भाषा, साहित्य और सांस्कृतिक परंपराओं को संरक्षित रखा। स्मृति और भाषायी निरंतरता पर आधारित उनकी मौखिक एवं लिखित परंपराएँ आज भारतीय प्रवासी इतिहास और संस्कृति की अमूल्य धरोहर मानी जाती हैं।
