Brief About the Chair

The Swami Vivekanand Chair was established on 12th January 2021 on the 158 birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand Ji.The Swami Vivekanand Chair is a prestigious academic position established in Universities and Research Institutions to honor and perpetuates the teachings and philosophy of Swami Vivekanand, one of India’s most revered spiritual leaders and social reformers. Swami Vivekanand is renowned of his contributions to the promotion of Vedanta and Yoga, his advocacy for social justice, and his efforts to bridge eastern and western thought. 

  • ​The Convener of the Chair is Dr. Monika Mehrotra, Associate Professor in Economics, Department of Liberal Arts and Humanities, Swami Vivekanand Chair, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut.
  • Padmashree Awardee Dr. Ravindra Kumar is the Chair Professor of Swami Vivekanand Chair, Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut.

Aims of the Chair

To create a perfect human being through education who is ready to face the challenges of the real world and promote in-depth research on Swami Vivekananda’s teachings and philosophy, develop academic courses exploring his ideas, organize seminars and conferences for scholarly dialogues, support interdisciplinary studies connecting his ideas with various fields, and publish research to disseminate knowledge about his contributions widely.    

Objectives of the Chair

  • The objective of Swami Vivekananda Chair typically revolves around promoting the values, teachings, and philosophy of Swami Vivekananda. The Chair is established to achieve several key goals:
  • To encourage in-depth research and scholarship on the life, works, and teachings of Swami Vivekananda, including his views on education, spirituality, social reform, women empowerment and human values.
  • To develop educational programs, seminars, workshops, and public lectures to disseminate Swami Vivekananda’s ideas to a wider audience, including students, academics, and the general public.
  • To promote the application of Swami Vivekananda’s principles in addressing contemporary social and cultural issues, fostering a spirit of nationalism, social service and ethical conduct.
  • To facilitate interdisciplinary studies that connects Swami Vivekananda’s philosophy with various academic fields such as philosophy, religion, psychology, sociology, and education.
  • To produce publications that explores and interprets Swami Vivekananda’s contributions, and develops resources such as libraries and digital archives.
  • To establish collaborations with other academic institutions, research centers, and organizations to further the principles of Swami Vivekananda’s teachings.
  • By achieving these objectives, Swami Vivekananda Chair aims to keep alive the legacy of Swami Vivekananda and inspire future generations to incorporate his visionary ideas into their personal and professional lives.

Chair Activities

  • To conduct and supporting research projects, publishing papers, books and articles on Swami Vivekananda’s philosophy and teachings.
  • To develop and offering courses, lectures and workshops related to his ideas and their contemporary relevance.
  • To organize national and international seminars, conferences, and symposiums to facilitate scholarly discussion and public engagement. 
  • To host public lectures and community outreach programs to raise awareness about Vivekananda’s contribution in the society.
  • To partner and collaborate with other academic institutions and organization to promote interdisciplinary and cross –cultural studies related to Vivekananda’s vision.
