A dynamic, versatile, charismatic and multidimensional personality. Sanghmata Dr. Mukti Bhatnagar was a Professor of Medicine and a teacher of high acclaim and repute.
Dr. Mukti was born in the holy city of Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, on 16th January 1957, in a prestigious family of educationists, doctors and civil servants as the fifth child of Mrs. Kamal Narain & Dr. Jagat Narain. She did her schooling from Allahabad and was always an inquisitive child who never settled for the "second position", a habit that helped her to attain many milestones during the journey of her unpretentious life. She was selected for MBBS at AFMC Pune and joined the prestigious Institute in 1974. Thereafter, she also got selected in UPCPMT the same year but preferred getting transferred to MLN Medical College at Allahabad. She completed her graduation (MBBS) and post-graduation (MD in General Medicine) from M.L.N. College, Allahabad. Her passion to venture into the unknown led her to acquire knowledge in alternative and contemporary medical fields. She added to her professional qualifications by attaining specializations such as Post Graduate Diploma in Maternal and Child Health and in Geriatric Medicine from Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi.
Dr. Mukti Bhatnagar, apart from being an excellent student, displayed remarkable skills in extracurricular activities. She was a constant source of new ideas which instilled energy into every cultural event she took part in. She was never apprehensive to speak her mind and this quality of hers was evident in her being an exceptional orator. She always enjoyed interacting with people both personally as well as while addressing large gatherings. She was very well-read and had a superb command of words which enabled her to connect on an individual level with the people around her.
A loving teacher, she was adjudged as the best teacher of Subharti Medical College, Meerut many times. With a long and illustrious teaching experience of 22 years, Dr. Mukti Bhatnagar not only oversaw the development of the Department of General Medicine but simultaneously facilitated and promoted the growth of all the other medical and academic specialities, thus taking Subharti Medical College to newer heights. She had been a fabulous research guide and had attended and chaired scientific sessions in more than 65 national/international workshops and conferences. Apart from devoting her time to treating and managing the patients, she actively guided numerous post-graduate medical students towards the degrees of MD and DNB in General Medicine. She also actively supervised the research activities in her department and was the author of numerous research articles published in journals of national and international repute. On the national medical platform, she had been a member of MCI. She presented a guest lecture on "HIPPOCRATIC OATH- Revisiting in the Present Medical Scenario" at Coimbatore, India and authored in much-acclaimed API medical update Vol. 23, 123: Chapter 149, Titled: Hippocratic Oath: Revisiting in the Present Medical Scenario.
Amidst her extremely busy clinical and academic schedule, Dr. Mukti Bhatnagar still managed to take time out to participate in various academic and professional bodies. Apart from being a life member of more than a dozen organizations, she also held administrative positions in several such academic and professional bodies. Her brilliant oratory skills led her to share a platform with numerous eminent speakers which also included regular talks on All India Radio pertaining to the topics of maternal & child health, common medical ailments and preventive medicine between the years 1993 to 2002. She had the most coveted distinction of presenting lectures on "Physical Disability in the Elderly" and on "Physical Rehabilitation: Disabilities in Old Age" before an august gathering of 'SAARC' member countries.
She was the founder and a Chief Mentor to the Subharti Medical College & Swami Vivekanand Subharti University. She was the guiding force for the growth of the Subharti ideology. She considered the entire Subharti campus as her home and all the residents as her own family members. She knew everyone on the campus by name and had a direct connection with people. She was like a mother to everyone on the campus. She was highly active in contributing ideas for every socio-cultural event taking place on the campus and continuously motivated people to plan and participate in such events
In recognition of her dedicated services in the field of education, health and social service, she was conferred with the 'U.P. Ratna' by the All India Conference of Intellectuals. She received 'The Mahila Gaurav Samman' on International Women's Day, from the U.P. Films Photo Journalist Welfare Association for her commitment to the cause of Women upliftment and empowerment. She was decorated with the "Rajiv Gandhi Shiromani Award" by The National Integration and Economic Council, New Delhi for her unstinted contribution towards the spread of peace and harmony in the community. She was honoured for 'Services towards the Women Welfare' on International Women's Day by C.C.S. University
Swami Vivekanand Subharti University conferred D.Litt. Honoris Causa in recognition of her outstanding work as a rare exemplar who have enriched humanities in particular and humanity/ society at large. With Dr. Mukti Bhatnagar scaling new heights in her social and professional life, she was a humanitarian from heart & mind and was always closely involved with social causes for the upliftment of lower socioeconomic groups of society. She was the pioneer of the Subharti movement for Social Service and Equality. She was the one who always believed that everyone deserves a chance so as to prove one's mettle and was instrumental in providing the opportunity to many for their betterment. Her judicious use of experience and talent made a difference in the lives of many due to her selfless acts of kindness. She was a key figure in bringing Education to the doorstep of the Children of Laborers by opening an Ishwar Chandra Vidya Sagar School which continues to provide education free of cost to the children. She was an Executive member (honorary) of the administrative Committee for rural-primary and secondary schools.
She was one of the pioneers who started the Subharti movement for Social Service and Equability. Sanghmata was the founder President of MTV Buddhist Religious & Charitable Trust. Two Universities and many schools are operational under the trust. Her philanthropic works were never dictated by class conformities, caste, or religion but were based on altruism and prosocial actions. By the influence of learning of Thathgat, she accepted Buddhism and was honoured with the 'SanghaMata' title conferred upon her by the Secretary-General of Mahanayaka Committee of Myanmar in 2018.
She was the most incredible role model who taught everyone to be always true to themselves and to always push to learn more. Dr. Mukti Bhatnagar gifted the Subharti family with the 'Subharti Gaan' and 'Subharti Geet', something's which will make her presence felt amidst us forever.
Sanghmata Dr. Mukti Bhatnagar Chair of Excellence in Medicine Chair was formed on the 9th of September 2021 with the below-mentioned objectives:
To encourage Postgraduate & Undergraduate teaching among students.
To promote both disciplinary and interdisciplinary research activities.
To offer a platform for inter-university/inter medical college academic activities.
