India won its independence through the struggles and dedication of our Freedom fighters and martyrs. Their revolutionary and path-breaking thoughts and actions have left an imprint on the Indian Freedom Struggle. They charted out indigenous ways to attain freedom from British dominion and played a pivotal role in the Indian Freedom struggle. This is of utmost importance that we acquaint the teachers and students with their thoughts and contribution and to engage them in studies; research and fieldwork-based extension service programs of constructive work.
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose born on January 23, 1897, in Cuttack, Orissa was a great son of India. He was an intellectual, scholar, and statesman and contributed greatly to the Indian freedom struggle. He bravely led an Indian National Army or the Azad Hind Fauj from abroad against the Western powers during World War II.
Netaji, The son of a wealthy and prominent Bengali lawyer, studied at Presidency College, Calcutta (Kolkata), from which he was expelled in 1916 for nationalist activities, and the Scottish Churches College (graduating in 1919). His parents insisted him to join the University of Cambridge in England and prepare for the Indian Civil Services. In 1920, he cleared the Civil services examination, but in April 1921, after knowing about the nationalist turmoil in India, he resigned his candidacy and hurried back to India. Throughout his career, and primarily in the early stages, he was supported financially and emotionally by an elder brother, Sarat Chandra Bose (1889–1950), a wealthy Calcutta lawyer.
Netaji worked under Chitta Ranjan Das, a politician in Bengal. He became a youth educator, journalist, and commandant of the Bengal Congress volunteers. His activities led to his imprisonment in December 1921. In 1924, he was appointed chief executive officer of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation, with Das as Mayor. He was elected mayor of Calcutta while in prison. Released and then re-arrested several times for his nationalist views. He wrote The Indian Struggle, 1920–1934, and discussed India’s cause with European leaders. He returned from Europe in 1936, was again taken into custody, and was released after a year.
In 1938, he was elected president of the Indian National Congress and formed a national planning committee, which formulated a policy of broad industrialization. He founded the Forward Bloc. His refusal to remain in prison during this critical period of India’s history was expressed in a determination to fast to death, which frightened the British government into releasing him. On January 26, 1941, though closely watched, he escaped from his Calcutta residence in disguise and, traveling via Kabul and Moscow, eventually reached Germany in April.
In Germany, he was attached to the Special Bureau for India under Adam von Trottzu Solz which was responsible for broadcasting on the German-sponsored Azad Hind Radio.
In 1943, after being disillusioned that Germany could be of any help in gaining India's independence, Netaji left for Japan. He travelled with the German submarine U-180 around the Cape of Good Hope to the southeast of Madagascar, where he was transferred to the I-29 for the rest of the journey to Imperial Japan. This was the only civilian transfer between two submarines of two different navies in World War II.
The Japanese also took possession of Andaman and Nicobar Islands in 1942 and a year later, the Provisional Government and the INA were established in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands with Lt Col. A.D. Loganathan appointed its Governor-General. The islands were renamed Shaheed (Martyr) and Swaraj (Independence).
